I landed a job with decent pay and benefits. The only problem is employees are expected to give a bit more of their time and not leaving the office at 6. I mean it's not written in the contract, but you will be "called" if leaving on time.

In the end, I usually leave at 7 though some are leaving the office a bit later.

Given the pay, I'm kinda ok with it but at the same time it's not part of the deal.

My boss is a Japanese, so maybe it's a cultural thing.

How do I navigate this?

Communicate that you have a very important thing to do at home. If it doesn't work, then you need to accept it as a reality in the company culture.

Just tuck your head down and follow the lead. You'll be fine.

Japanese and Asian work environment. Get use to it. Join American or Euro if you need to have flexibility and working OTOT.

A random thought. The Europeans and Americans can OTOT cos they outsource the hard work to Asia

Welcome to the working world, bro. This kind of “unspoken rule” is quite common, especially under a Japanese boss.
Long hours are part of their work culture. Since you’re okay with the pay, just set your own limits. Leaving at 7 is already giving extra. If you keep staying later, they’ll expect it as the norm.p

Best way? Work smart, be efficient, and occasionally “stay back” when it really matters. Otherwise, slowly ease into leaving earlier. Just don’t be the first to chiong out at 6 sharp. Balance is key.
